What a loving ceremony. Burying my grandparents was one of the hardest things I've ever done, and like your sister, leaving them exposed just made it worse. This Minnesota Lutheran will be talking to her family about borrowing this tradition/custom.

This is really one of the most wonderful things, and one that never ceases to amaze, me about Judaism: the way it helps us deal and come to terms with so many things in our lives and in such a "human" way.
I lost a brother three years ago and the laws of mourning helped me a great deal then and still do around the time of his yahrzeit, when his absence is more strongly felt.
You really seem to have a great rabbi.
