Thank you Cindy. Beautiful story, beautifully told. And a reminder to remember to listen hard as I can in my own family.

It's so funny the little things that hang about our psyche - one of mine is the counting of prune stones - Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, rich-man, poor-man, beggar-man, thief. What will I be? Lady, baby, gypsy, queen. What shall I wear? etc. Afterall, no-one eats stewed prunes any more but during the War [rationing in the UK] that was about as near as you got to a pudding!
Note it only goes up to 8 - although I'm not sure if that's because 8 prunes would be excessively extravagant or whether it might have rather dire effects on the digestion!
Cheers

Cindy, I'm so sorry for your loss. Losses. I wish I had something more useful or profound to say, but today, all I have is sympathy.

Cindy - what a wonderful tribute and reminder that we are all the product of others in so many ways. Reading this post, I couldn't help but go back ten years to when I was cleaning our my grandparent's home. So many mysteries, so many unanswered questions. It's sad, really. But in the end, it is life. Thanks.
