LUST FOR THE MACBOOK AIR - BUT IS IT GOOD FOR YOU?

I usually do enormous research before buying a new laptop.  Last time I moved from Windows to a 12 inch Powerbook mostly for the 3 lb. weight at the lowest price.  I dropped the darn thing and the disk drive broke so I have to do something -- but what? 

Apple has quit making Powerbooks under 5 lb and now I know why.  They want the market for the super-duper groovy looking, skinny MACBOOK AIR.   I'm totally psyched by it, although the price is really stiff - $1800 and there's no disk drive so you need to spend another hundred on the external one.  I don't know...  Here's what Walt Mossberg says:

I guess I could just get a Vaio - and I don't know if I have the bucks to do either.

When my husband brought me a surprise - an iPhone I took it back because I couldn't insure it OR search contacts (you still can't) and the ATT rates were so absurdly high, so I know that even with Apple, looks aren't everything.  But the idea of a light machine with power (even without a disk drive) is so seductive.  And it's so damn gorgeous.  What  are you thinking about this BEAUTIFUL new toy?

I used to have a VAIO and I loved it. The reason I ended up with a Powerbook is that the light-weight Vaio is now so expensive. It's real discrimination against older, short people like me - 5-6 pounds, like my workhorse Toshibal Satellite Pro in the old days - just won't do it anymore... and shouldn't have to.

Glad I found yoru post on MacAir. I have been intrigued by the raging debate for a while. Liked tha fact that you also mentioned Viao. I am going to trackback this post , so keep n eye!

Saw the commercial for the AIR and...wow...it's siren song was strong and loud. But the price tag was a deal breaker. I do have an iPhone and I dearly love it. I was just going to get a Blackberry, but my youngest son talked me into getting the other, so I'll just blame him and not my own personal weakness. It's more convenient that way.

It does look GREAT. I acquired a Macbook Pro almost a year ago and have not regretted it a single second since. I has a good-sized screen, it is not heavy, it is also quite strong. Before that I owned an Imac but switched to the Macbbook to be able to carry it around. I would never go back to Windows as I find Macs much more intuitive to use.
