Mary was the antithesis of the subservient, whispery, bouffant, tightly-girdled model of womanhood popular just as I was creeping up on adolescence. Seeing her pictures in that first album at age 11, I felt I had discovered a new species, and literally no longer feared being a woman. My exact thought was, "So, that's what a woman is." She was loud, barefoot and equal. Her glorious bell will ring forever and ever.
